چکیده

In this paper, we explore the relationship between phonetics and phonology, in an attempt to broaden the search for possible sources of complexity that arise in sound patterns and sound systems. We propose that complexity may be better understood if one considers phonetics and phonology together in their multi-faceted interaction. Our goal here is to present an overview of the relevant issues in order to help define a notion (or notions) of complexity in the domain of sound systems. Rather than proposing specific measures of complexity, we provide a backdrop to a constructive discussion of the nature of complexity in sound systems. We begin in §2 by reviewing different notions that have been interpreted as being related to the issue of phonological complexity. Major historical landmarks of complexity in phonetics and phonology are discussed in Pellegrino et al.’s introduction to this volume. From our perspective we organize these earlier endeavors into concerns with: (i) markedness, (ii) effort, (iii) naturalness, (iv) information content. We take the time to review them here because they are directly relevant to the relationship between phonetics and phonology and the nature of representations. In §3 we turn to the details of the relationship between phonology and phonetics. In this regard, we address two main questions that have traditionally played a central part in the understanding of the phoneticsphonology interface. The first of these is the issue of gradience vs. categoriality in the domain of linguistic sound systems, and its implications for the question of an adequate representation of linguistic units.

Gradient perception of intonation

Phonologists usually reserve the term gradience for the distinction between phonetics and phonology. Phonetics is gradient and phonology is categorical. But in recent years, phonotactic patterns have been found to be gradient both along frequency counts and grammaticality judgments (see for instance Pierrehumbert 2003, Frisch & Stearns, this volume, and Jurafsky 2003). This chapter addresses th...

Optionality and Gradience in Persian Phonology: An Optimality Treatment

The distribution of the allophones of /?/in certain contexts involves free variation and gradient preferences. An organized survey was conducted to elicit the judgments of 37 native Persian speakers concerning the well-formedness of /?/allophonic behavior in five different phonological positions. The results showed that the differences in judgment between the various categories are not just t...

Testing the Role of Phonetic Knowledge in

Phonological patterns often have phonetic bases. But whether phonetic substance should be encoded in synchronic phonological grammar is controversial. We aim to test the synchronic relevance of phonetics by investigating native Mandarin speakers’ applications of two exceptionless tone sandhi processes to novel words: the contour reduction 213→21/__T (T≠213), which has a clear phonetic motivatio...

Categories and gradience in intonation: evidence from linguistics and neurobiology

Multiple cues interact to signal multiple functions in intonation simultaneously, which makes intonation notoriously complex to analyze. The Autosegmental-Metrical model for intonation analysis has proved to be an excellent vehicle for separating the components, but evidence for the phonetics/phonology dichotomy on which it hinges has proved elusive. Advocating a multidisciplinary approach, thi...

Lign215 Variation in Phonetics and Phonology

Brief course description This seminar deals with the linguistic and sociolinguistic sources of variation in speech and their formal treatment in theories of phonetics and phonology. Variation is here broadly construed to encompass both low-level phonetic variation (often referred to as gradience) and sociolinguistically-related variation (such as the existence of alternant forms). Similarly, “f...
